Individuals must be bold and voice their minds without being obnoxious or pushy. If you don’t agree with what others are saying, don’t say yes to them, regardless of their title or position in the hierarchy. Remember that you have complete freedom to voice your thoughts and ideas as long as you are satisfied that what you are saying is relevant and reasonable. Assertiveness is a good personality feature in which a person knows what has to be said or addressed without harming or offending the other person.

Why do you think your bosses don’t trust you when you want a day off for a legitimate reason? The solution is straightforward. Your lack of assertiveness causes your manager to have reservations, and he/she finally becomes hesitant to let you leave. Trust me, if you’re having a difficulty at home or aren’t feeling well, there’s no need to be concerned. Be self-assured unless and until you’re lying or have done something egregious.

Have you ever participated in or given a presentation in a business meeting or discussion? If you answered yes, you are well aware of the meaning and significance of assertiveness. Don’t you all pay close attention when your company’s Managing Director or Chairman gives a presentation to the entire team about the company’s strategy, vision, and what has to be done in the next years? The reason for this is his self-assurance and boldness, which make you trust everything he says in a given venue.

Do you bring someone from your present employer with you to an interview who supports what you’re saying? I’m sure you couldn’t even imagine doing the same. An individual applying for a marketing executive position in a potential organisation would share all of his previous successful deals, client handling experiences, achievements, targets, vendor handling, and so on to demonstrate that he is better than the other candidate waiting outside the interview room and should be hired for the position. Assertiveness plays a crucial part in this situation. The individual’s confidence and ability to present himself/herself accurately without fabricating stories or offending others is what helps him land the job. When you respond to the interviewer without glancing around but straight into his or her eyes, you are demonstrating assertiveness. Nobody will take you seriously if you fiddle with objects around you or mess with your tie or hair in your personal or professional life. Do we not do our hardest to seem strong and aggressive when we need anything from our parents, whether it’s an expensive present or a mobile phone, so that they comprehend our actual need for the item?

Between assertiveness and rudeness, there is a fine line to be drawn. To make your point, you don’t have to yell or quarrel with the other person. Assertiveness is defined as expressing yourself and your points in front of another person, as opposed to being hostile and abusing the other person. It is your right to express your thoughts and ideas to others, but arguing is regarded impolite and unprofessional. One effective approach to demonstrate your assertiveness is to make eye contact with the individual with whom you are interacting. Assertiveness is also influenced by the pitch and tone of your voice. Your anxiety and lack of confidence might be seen in your sluggish speech and whispering into someone’s ear. Make your point loud and clear. Avoid using slangs at work and carefully select appropriate terms.
